The song of the Sirens

Giardini Naxos is also known as the city of sirens, who populated the nearby Sirina river, which divides the city from Taormina. According to this legend, in the vicinity of this river you could hear the melodies of the sirens, especially during the nights of the full moon. The mystery deepens even more because of a well-known popular story. The ancient legend tells that on a full moon night, a group of local boys and girls, fascinated by the silver reflections of the moon on the water and the songs of the sirens, went down the valley but never returned. It is thought that the children, for their candor of children, were transformed into Sirens and every night of the full moon, you can hear their songs coming from the waters of the Sirina.

The beautiful mermaid as we know her today has nothing to do with the unattractive being, half woman and half bird, of the origins. These mythological figures have always attracted
and confused the sailors who saw them, so profoundly as to bring them to disgrace or madness. Even Ulysses, in order to listen to the sweet melody of the sirens, had himself tied to the mast of his ship to avoid any tragic consequences.
